iOS 7 Compatible Jailbreak Tweaks And Apps In Cydia

The iOS 7 untethered jailbreak is here. Things have been a little quiet recently on the topic of a public jailbreak release, leading us all to think that it could be quite some time until we were able to see how iOS 7 performs when truly set free. The good news is that the wait is finally over. The bad news is that early discussions and word from Cydia creator Jay Freeman seem to suggest that the latest Evasi0n7 release might have been rushed out before the right people could get the necessary components in place to support users.

One of the most concerning areas of interest seems to be the lack of involvement from Saurikhimself. We should all know by now that Cydia is a relatively small cog in the overall jailbreak machine, but nevertheless, it’s still a vitally important cog from the end-user’s perspective.Saurik has been using his Twitter timeline to inform his followers that he wasn’t told about the decision to release Evasi0n7, nor was he asked to provide an official iOS 7 version of Cydia to install alongside the jailbreak.

Freeman has also expressed concerns about the Evad3rs team not testing his official build of MobileSubstrate that had earlier been sent out to core developers within the iOS community. As things stand at the moment, anyone who jailbreaks using the initial release won’t have any Substrate support and therefore won’t be able to install any tweaks or offerings that rely solely on it. Pod2g, a security researcher and core member of the Evad3rs team, has also sent out the following tweet which echoes Saurik’s concerns:

Tweaks relying on mobilesubstrate have issues with early version of evasion. Keep away from that for the moment, we’re working on a fix.

The jailbreak loving iOS community have also been getting in on the action. A publicly accessible Google spreadsheet has already been created that lists a number of popular Cydia tweaks, outlining their current status and the device that they have been tested on. My3G andMyWi have both been confirmed to be working, as has PkgBackup. SBUtils and the extremely popular iFile are showing as have partial compatibility with iOS 7 with vital libraries likelibstatusbar causing full system crashes.

The growing compatibility chart can be accessed directly from this link. This latest jailbreak has only been out for a matter of hours and has already proved to be one of the most controversial. Something tells us the full story is yet to unfold.

The Story Behind iOS 7 Jailbreak: Evasi0n7, TaiG App Store, Geohot And More

Today has been one of those days. First there was the unexpected release of a new untethered jailbreak from the folks at Evad3rs, which got everyone so excited we thought our Twitter streams might explode. It seems people really like being able to jailbreak their iOS devices.

Then, things got crazy. It turned out that those who had Chinese set as default language were seeing a third-party app store being installed as default rather than the Cydia app that we’re all used to seeing spring up after the jailbreak is complete. What’s more, it became clear that the app store in question, TaiG, was full of piracy. Cracked iOS apps were abound, and it caused something of a stir.

And then we really thought our Twitter streams would explode.

It looks like the people at Evad3rs have been paying attention to the outcry after, as promised, the people behind the jailbreak in question took to the internet to explain their position on the whole shambles.

The whole post is rather a long one, and we strongly suggest you head on over (full letter alternatively embedded below) and give it a proper read yourselves rather than us try and explain the whole thing word for word here. Needless to say though, Evad3rs is trying desperately to get away from the suggestion that it is in bed with an app store that is there to offer the Chinese market a gateway to hacked apps.

The team is also keen to point out that it told Saurik, the man behind Cydia and MobileSubstrate that they were working on a new iOS 7 jailbreak, and that they were working with TaiG on the project. Evad3rs seems upset that Saurik was also helping their competition out – something the man himself counters by pointing out on Twitter that he is not a member of Evad3rs and as such, shouldn’t be bound to any one team.

The real question surrounded why the Evad3rs jailbreak was seemingly rushed out in the first place. With no proper press warning and no developer support, the jailbreak took not just users by surprise but also the very people that it needed to alter their apps to accommodate it. That question didn’t take too long to be answered after an audio recording popped up online that appeared to feature jailbreaker Geohot (now as @tomcr00se on Twitter). Interestingly, it seems he was in conversation with a Chinese entity who wanted to buy his almost-complete iOS 7 jailbreak at a lower price, with the remaining pieces to be provided by them. It would seem that Evad3rs got wind of that impending deal and rushed their competing jailbreak out in order to preserve the deal already in place with TaiG.

Geohot, for his part, now says that the sale was never going to happen thanks to a conversation with his lawyers.

As far as TaiG is concerned, it is only available as default in China, and apparently it can be removed once installed, and Cydia can be made to take its place should the jailbreaker so wish. Apparently that means Evad3rs is giving people a choice, though we’d argue that giving people the option to uncheck TaiG installation at the point of jailbreaking would have been a true choice. Forcing TaiG onto people is the opposite of choice, really.

The people at TaiG are reportedly working to clean its store of illegitimate apps, too, which should go some way to easing fears that it is less than legitimate. It was also confirmed in the posting that there was indeed a deal between Evad3rs and TaiG as had been reported, and that money did change hands. There’s been no confirmation on the amount of money that changed hands, though.

As for where things go from here, it’s still a little murky. It’s debatable whether everything is really in place for the iOS 7 jailbreak to be truly useful just yet, but if you really must jailbreak now then you should be OK. TaiG is only installed if you have the language set to Chinese, and Evad3rs claims that there is nothing untoward going on beneath the surface. Security researchers are combing through what the jailbreak does, and what it installs, as you read this so if all is not well, expect to hear about it soon.

It’s important to note though that, apart from what is available in the TaiG store, there has been no evidence that the new Evad3rs jailbreak isn’t safe to use. If the word from well known member of the Evad3rs team, Planetbeing, is anything to go by, Evasi0n7 is safe to use and does not upload private data from users’ devices:

Hey, sorry, I’m going to try to respond to the concerns on this thread. As far as I know, there’s no private data being uploaded by them, other than what’s necessary for the download and install of the apps. I mean, even Cydia phones home with your udid. That’s why saurik is able to give such accurate counts of jailbroken devices. I talked to the Taig guys and they assured me that there’s nothing out of the ordinary going on. If anyone has proof otherwise, I would really like to see it.

But it’s certainly not been the smooth release they’ll have been hoping for.

Update x1: It seems like TaiG is no longer installed as default when jailbreaking in China with Evasi0n7. Pod2g on Twitter:

@Pod2g: We have decided to remotely disable the default installation of TaiG in China for further investigations on the piracy issue.

Fix iPhone Stuck At Apple Boot Logo Loop After iOS 7 Jailbreak

The recent release of the iOS 7 untethered jailbreak has clearly taken most of the iOS community by surprise. The Evad3rs development team have been hard at work in the background pulling together the necessary components to jailbreak all devices capable of running iOS 7.0.x. As with all first version jailbreaks, it is to be expected that there will be a few teething problems, and it looks like the latest Evasi0n release is proving no different. A growing number of users are reporting that their attempts to jailbreak iOS devices is failing, with the process falling over on the Apple boot logo, which as you might expect stems from a small oversight on the developers side.

Enthusiastic iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners have been downloading the latest Evasi0n release in their droves. Individual mileage from the jailbreak seems to be varied depending on who you speak to, but seems to fall into three categories: the user either couldn’t download the jailbreak due to server demand. The user successfully downloaded the tool and performed the jailbreak without issue. Or finally, the user downloaded the jailbreak but couldn’t complete the process due to the device hanging on the Apple boot logo at a pivotal part of the jailbreak. If you fall into the latter category then the good news is that there is a resolution.

The Evad3rs team have reacted quickly to users taking to social media sites such as Twitter and Reddit to express their concerns at the failing process. The Apple boot logo issue only seems to occur on those devices that are running a version of iOS 7.0 that has been installed via an over-the-air (OTA) update. If you’ve downloaded your current version of iOS through a prompt within the Settings.app then it’s likely this issue could occur. The team behind the jailbreak have updated the Evasi0n website with the following notice:

Over The Air updates of iOS 7 are known to create an issue and make the jailbreak fail. Some devices are then stuck on the Apple Boot Logo. Until we fix that, please restore your device to 7.0.4. with iTunes first.

It may be an extra step in the process that users would prefer not to go through, but it represents an almost immediate resolution to a pretty big problem and should be considered a fix at this time. If you are stuck, enter your device into DFU mode:

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer.
  2. Turn iPhone off.
  3. Start iTunes.
  4. Hold Power and Home buttons together for 10 seconds or so.
  5. Release Power button but keep holding the Home button until your computer recognizes a new USB device.
  6. iTunes will now recognize your iPhone.

evad3rs team post 'letter to the community" about evasi0n jailbreak

The evad3rs team has posted a "letter to the community" to address many of the concerns raised about the surprising release of their iOS 7 jailbreak. It includes their reasons for the inclusion of the Chinese app store, TaiG, the pirated apps found therein, why they released it when and how they did, and what, if any, financial considerations they had. From evasi0n:
We are deeply troubled by the rumours and speculation surrounding our iOS 7 jailbreak. We would like to present the whole story to you.
We're still advising that you should wait before jailbreaking iOS 7. But, if you're interested in the iOS 7 jailbreak, give it a read and let me know - how, if at all, does the letter influence your opinion of the evasi0n?

Update x1: This release has also caught Saurik, the founder of Cydia, by surprise. He has clarified it on Twitter that the Cydia build included in version 1.0 of Evasi0n 7 isn’t official, and hence will be prone to bugs. Tweaks relying on Substrate will have issues with this early release of Evasi0n. This issue will be fixed in later versions of Evasi0n 7.
Update x2: Evasi0n 7 is also compatible to work with iOS 7.1 beta 2.
